Chiefly correspondence of Elizabeth White Nims Rankin, her children, and other family members. Many letters, especially in the 1870s, are addressed to Elizabeth's brother-in-law, Horace Nims of Columbia, S.C. Many other letters, particularly 1880 through 1907, are to and from Elizabeth's son, Luther Nims of Mount Holly, Gaston County, N.C. Correspondence, 1860-1865, contains Civil War news. Letters to and from a brother in the Confederate army concern military life. Letters from 1865 to 1898 deal chiefly with family life, including discussions of the family's agricultural interests and of Luther's cotton mill. Some of Luther's letters also relate to the Massachusetts Agricultural College, which he attended until 1875. Also included are letters from Elizabeth's son, Boyden Nims, to various relatives, including his mother and brother Luther. Some of Boyden's letters relate to his service in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War. In the 1900s, Boyden wrote from Ann Arbor, Mich., where he was professor of physiology at the University of Michigan. There are also a few family financial papers; genealogical materials relating to the White, Spratt, Polk, and Campbell families; Elizabeth's recollections of her life; and brief account books of Horace Nims, relating to the Granby quarry in South Carolina, and to Wade Rankin.
